mimesis (Porcelain crab) depicts digital collages composed of the artist’s fingers and feet, contorted and cropped into various shapes to resemble the body parts of a porcelain crab species. Porcelain crabs are not scientifically considered “true crabs”, and are one of the two crustacean families commonly cited in carcinisation, the tendency for crustaceans to convergently evolve and resemble crabs. mimesis takes reference from the elasticity of this transformation; deterritorialising and constructing relationships between body parts of tactility and mobility.

Drawing from the visual language of taxonomy and scanning electron microscopy, mimesis subverts the articulation of the perceived, organised sovereign body often gazed upon during biological discovery. Rather, the animal is understood as an assemblage that is in constant becoming, escaping stable form.
